MALTA FILM FUND 2014

HIGHLIGHTS

1. The Malta Film Fund will focus on quality rather than quantity.

2. The Development and Production grants will be divided into two separate calls.  Development will be given priority and launched first week of April.  The production call will be launched in June.

3. In the call for Development we are going to introduce a Writers’ Grant.  These will be  €5,000 each and will be a simple 100% grant. 

4. The maximum Development Grant for each project will increase from €20,000 to a maximum of €30,000.

5. Every project will have a mentor to help the production, and/or a monitor who ensures the project remains on track.

6. The Guidelines have been streamlined to encourage more local and international co-productions. 

7. Apart from feature films (including animation) and creative documentaries the Malta Film Fund has now introduced support for high quality international TV drama series.

 


 

 
MALTA FILM FUND 2014: ACTION 2 - PRODUCTION SUPPORT - OPEN

This funding is a grant.

The objective of the Malta Film Fund is to nurture and back the development and production of Maltese films (i.e. Feature Films, Short Films, Creative Documentaries, and High Quality International TV Drama Series) which in turn contributes towards building an Indigeneous Film Industry. The ultimate objective is to create a self-sustained Maltese film industry.

We welcome applications for film projects in all genres (including animation) from new and established filmmakers that aim to promote Maltese storytelling, Maltese stories, Maltese cinema and by doing so improve the structure of the Maltese Indigenous Film Industry.

WHO CAN APPLY

Production Funds are aimed at production companies that has audiovisual production as its main purpose and activity and a company that is duly registered as an audiovisual production company in Malta/Europe, having at least one director or a major shareholder of the company who is a Maltese/European citizen.

Applications may be made by an individual or through a Maltese/European Independent Audiovisual Company which satisfies at least ONE of the following eligible criteria:

1) Producer/s is a Maltese citizen or holds a permanent residence status in Malta;

2) Writer/s is a Maltese citizen or holds a permanent residence status in Malta;

3) Director/s is a Maltese citizen or holds a permanent residence status in Malta;

And ONE of the following criteria:

4) Content and location of story is based completely or partially in Malta;

5) Language to be used is Maltese;

6) Likely location of the development, production and/or post production is Malta.

ELIGIBLE PROJECTS FOR PRODUCTION FUNDS

1. Feature Films of a total duration of minimum 60 minutes.

2. Creative Documentaries of a total duration of minimum 60 minutes.

3. High Quality International TV Drama Series (Pilot - 2 episodes total duration of minimum 90 minutes).

4. Short films having a screening time of less than 25 minutes.

MALTA FILM FUND 2014: ACTION 1 - DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT - CLOSED

The vision for the Development Fund is to foster a culture of script writing and proper development of feature films (all genres), high quality international television drama series and creative documentaries, which can eventually be taken to the Market to raise finance, support and move into production. The ultimate objective is to create a self-sustained Maltese indigenous film industry.

Applications that do not include all the requested material as specified in the guidelines (including signed documentation/declarations) will be considered as ineligible and will not be processed further. We strongly encourage applications from Producer Writer Director teams. Applications for a Writers’ Grant may be made by a Writer and Writer-Director team without a Producer; however for the next stage of development (Grant B) it is expected that a Producer will be attached to the project.

GRANT A: WRITERS’ GRANT

This funding is a grant.

The Malta Film Fund will offer a grant of €5,000 to be utilised towards the development of a script.

Projects seeking support under this scheme must have been developed to treatment stage or as a first draft script. This grant is to help writers to develop their projects to a stage where it can then be considered for further development funding (Grant B).

Who can apply

Applications may be made by an individual or through a Maltese/European Independent Audiovisual Company which satisfies the eligible criteria set out in these guidelines. Application may be made by the Writer; Writer/Director team and/or Writer/Producer/Director team.

Note: If you are applying for the Writers’ Grant, you do not need a Director or Producer attached to your project.

Note : If you are not the Writer you must have a Writer attached to your project.

Level of funding:

€5,000

Grant B: Development Grant

This funding is a grant.

This fund is for scripts that are at an advanced stage and approaching market-readiness. This grant is intended to help Producers maximise the chance of securing production funding, to finalise the complete development stage and bring the project to the stage where it can be taken into Production.

PROVISO: If an applicant has a project which can demonstrate a proven track record of the creative team involved and competence in the producer/s to  achieve the objectives of this grant; an application can be made without the provision of a script, however, it is at the discretion of the Evaluation Panel and the Fund Administrators whether this application will be considered under this strand, Development Grant (Grant B) or will be considered under the Writers’ Grant (Grant A).

The Development Grant may award grants up to €30,000.

Who can apply

Applications may be made by an individual or through a Maltese/European Independent Audiovisual Company which satisfies the eligible criteria set out in the guidelines. Application may be made by Writer/Producer/Director team – it is expected that the Producer processes the application for this grant.
